The Osprey design was developed in the Spring of 2014. The goal with this design was to make a board that had the size, float and competence of the Spruce Sherpa but was quicker and easier to turn. We developed a fleet of prototypes for the 2014.15 season and those proved to be well-liked by all the testers. Prototypes were also tried by a number of the Shredfest attendees in February 2015 and the feedback we got encouraged us to put the board into production. This season, the Osprey features a new "Flight" graphic from designer Caleb Warner.
While the Osprey is not quite as powerful a board as the Sherpa, with its full rocker it is very quick in turn initiation and has a more playful feel than the Sherpa. It is still a large board by skiboard standards, however it can be ridden comfortably by riders from 150 pounds and up. It excels in deep powder with its rocker at both tip and tail. Turns are effortless in those conditions. On ice, the flat center camber provides an exceptionally firm edge that is very smooth and free from chatter.
The width profile of the board is the same as the Sherpa, however that's where the similarity in geometry ends as the board is thinner for a softer, more forgiving ride. The board's construction is cap with a wood core. The base is sintered for wax retention and the topsheet is a very high gloss PBT material. Like other current Spruce boards, there are inserts for center mounting the Spruce riser as well as a -50mm position for deep powder and for riders that prefer a setback binding position.
Ospreys are available with any of the three 2017.18 Tyrolia bindings mounted on Spruce risers.
We also introduced a new binding system two seasons ago which combines the flexibility of a customer adjustable track binding with a thin, flexible skiboard. With its low stand-height, the Tyrolia PR10 binding gives the Osprey very quick edge-to-edge transition and a quick responsive feel in all snow conditions. This binding system incorporates two thin aluminum plates under the track for exceptional pull-out strength and does not change the soft flex of the Osprey. One of the great advantages of the PR 10 Power Rail binding is that it can easily be adjusted when families and friends want to share riding on this board. Accommodates boot sole lengths from 260mm to 380mm.
